DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. — Hundreds came out Saturday to remember Channel 2 Action News and WSB Radio's Captain Herb Emory and donate toys to one of his favorite charities.
Before the "Toys for Tots" event even started in Lithia Springs, the toys were starting to pile up. By the end of the day, it turned out to be a huge success.
Emory passed away in April of a massive heart attack.
"He's beaming. This is one of the biggest turnouts we have ever had all the years we've been doing it," said Channel 2's Mark Arum.
Arum told us he knew the "Toys for Tots" Christmas program at Fred's BBQ House in Lithia Springs was going to be very special.
"As long as I have been doing this, 15-plus years, I have never seen this many toys this early. It blows me away," said Arum.
Channel 2's Jason Durden of Newschopper 2 agreed.
"When I got here at 9 and saw what was already here, I mean, my heart was full. Just amazing crowd," said Durden.
Brian Luders says seeing the mounds of toys, bikes and people unloading bag after bag of toys for children in need is a fitting tribute to one of his best friends.
"I got goose bumps. (It is) absolutely amazing. To have this support for Herb is amazing," said Luders.
They told us they plan on building this event each year so it's bigger and better for Captain Herb.
