Sledgehammer used in burglary, thousands of dollars stolen

ATLANTA — Channel 2 Action News has obtained surveillance video showing a burglar ransacking a business and stealing money in the Nov. 16 break-in.

The owner of Maki's Market on Marietta Boulevard in northwest Atlanta hopes someone will recognize the man who he says got away with thousands of dollars and cost him more in damage.

Berhane Mihratbe, the owner, says the burglar came in through the restroom. He took a sledgehammer and broke down a cinder-block wall.

Once inside the cashier's stand, cameras caught the burglar stealing 250 packs of cigarettes, 175 Black & Mild cigars and $2,600 in cash. The burglar left the area briefly with his stash but then returned for more, taking a Dell laptop.

Mihratbe had to repair slot machines the burglar pried open with what looks like a crowbar.

The store has been open for three months and the owner says he has no choice but to keep moving forward.

"Just keep working, nothing to do. We know it happened. It's not safe but we have to work to live our life," he said.

The store has upped security since the break-in.
