Thieves cut through police substation to get to hair weave store

ATLANTA — Authorities said thieves cut through a new police station so they could get into a connecting beauty shop and steal weaves.

Somebody wanted the weaves in the beauty shop on Martin Luther King Drive in Northwest Atlanta so badly, they cut a huge hole in the wall and started to help themselves to handful after handful of hair.

"It's expensive and no wants to pay for it, but everyone wants to wear it," said one customer.

The manager at Beauty Depot said each box of stolen hair retailed at $120 and whoever did this got away with 70 boxes.

According to security video, the thieves started carving their hole in the wall around 2:30 a.m., but what they didn't know was the unmarked store front they broke into is now being leased by APD.

"Probably whoever broke in didn't realize it was a police precinct. As far as I know, there are no markings of any kind. We have nothing inside besides some cubicles and some phones," said Atlanta police spokesperson Greg Lyon.

The office they left a mess in will belong to the man now leading the investigation to find whoever did this and there are cameras all along the buildings in the area.

"Our CID office is around the corner. It's fully operational, functional and all of our valuables are in that building,," Lyon said.

This is at least the second time this store has been hit.

The store was able to open to customers Thursday.
