Subway worker shot by customer as she protected her son recovering after surgery

ATLANTA — The family of a Subway worker shot by a customer says she is now recovering at a hospital for kidney surgery.

Jada Statum works at the Subway on Northside Drive at Markham Street in southwest Atlanta.

A customer shot her and her co-worker Brittany Macon on Sunday after police say he complained about too much mayonnaise on his sandwich. Macon died from her injuries.

Statum, 24, was injured when the customer shot her in the stomach and back while she went to protect her 5-year-old son, who was with her at work.

“When she turned back around, trying to find out where her son was, he shot her again,” said Stephanie Griggs, Statum’s sister.

“Nothing should be to that extreme that you feel like you can just take a weapon out and take somebody’s life.”

On Tuesday night, Statum’s family told Channel 2′s Tom Jones that the 24-year-old underwent surgery.

Her family says doctors were able to save her kidney during the successful surgery. They say she continues to recover.
