Students say 'fake' diplomas may cost immigration status

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Dozens of students who spent hundreds of dollars to obtain high school diplomas are being told their diplomas aren't valid, and it could put their immigration status at risk.

Channel 2's Amy Napier Viteri went with students to a Norcross office building off Jimmy Carter Boulevard to ask about high school diplomas after students received notices from the government that their diplomas aren't real.

"They're giving out fake diploma's. They're stealing people's money," Reyna Morales told Viteri.

Morales said her husband paid hundreds of dollars and took weekly clases in a Norcross office identified as New Life Technical Academy. However, students told Channel 2 the high school diplomas are for something called the American Academy of Pinecrest.

Morales said her husband needed a high school diploma to fulfill a requirement to apply for deferred action immigation status and to stay legally in the country.

Viteri checked and said the school is accredited at its main campus in Hapeville.
