Students burned by hot asphalt during band practice

COWETA COUNTY, Ga. — Several East Coweta High School band members received serious burns on their hands when they crawled on hot asphalt during practice.

The Coweta County School System spokesperson, Dean Jackson, says the band was working on their routine on the day of the football team’s home opener back on August 29th.

Jackson says the whole marching band was rehearsing in the paved area where they usually practice.

Their routine called for the band members to place their hands on the asphalt and crawl. At least four students received significant burns on their hands, according to Jackson.

"The school system takes student safety seriously, and the matter was investigated over several days last week," Jackson wrote in a statement.

He says procedures have been put in place to make sure a similar incident doesn't happen in the future.
