CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — Police are investigating a string of crashes on a south metro interstate that left one person dead.
Investigators said they were called out to two separate crashes on Interstate 675 in Clayton County near State Rt. 138.
The first crash happened just after midnight Monday morning between a car and a fire truck.
HERO units arrived at the scene to find a second crash involving three more vehicles.
All lanes of I-675 were blocked while the crashes were investigated.
Officials told Channel 2's Steve Gehlbach that a small GMC SUV plowed into the back of the fire truck responding to the first crash, killing a passenger and injuring another. Neither was wearing a seat belt.
Troopers said the fire vehicle had emergency lights on adn was highly visible, but blocking the right lane.
The people in the first crash were actually shielded by the fire truck.
Two people were also injured in the initial wreck. There is no word on their conditions.
As of Monday morning, 13 people have died in traffic accidents over the Memorial Day weekend. That's four more than in 2014.
