DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A severe storm through north Fulton County was short but strong enough to send a massive tree into a house on Sharon Valley Court Friday.
Channel 2's Carl Willis and his photographer drove through the Dunwoody area seeing damage throughout, from direct hits to a road block on Peeler Road as crews worked to clean up downed trees.
Rita Jewart's said it was a near miss at her home on William Court.
"Within seconds the rain came heavy, the wind was circling, the trees were swaying and then I heard a big crack," Jewart said.
The top of a tree broke off and hit her deck and a repair man's truck.
She says a total of three trees came down all around her house, making it eerily similar to a tornado that hit back in 1998.
"Seventeen years ago I remember that tornado and it had the same feeling as that," Jewart told Willis.
Channel 2 Action News got calls reporting downed power lines at the Park Wood Village Apartments. When Willis arrived the entire complex and surrounding businesses were in the dark and crews worked to remove trees from roof tops.
Jewart's home fared much better than the one on Sharon Valley Court. But she says the sudden storm caused plenty of confusion for her and her neighbors.
"I couldn't tell if I was supposed to go downstairs or not," Jewart said.
"What did you do?" Willis asked Jewart.
"I did go downstairs," Jewart said.
Though the storms Friday evening were short-lived, more storms are expected for Saturday.
"An approaching cold front will bring widespread showers and storms, some possibly severe with damaging winds, hail and frequent lightning," said Severe Weather Team 2 Chief Meteorologist Glenn Burns. "They end tomorrow evening and drier and slightly cooler air moves in tomorrow night."
Burns said to expect low humidity and highs in the mid-80s for Sunday.
