Police cracking down on distracted drivers in South Fulton County

PALMETTO, Ga. — Police were looking for distracted drivers Tuesday afternoon in South Fulton County.

The number of deaths due to distracted drivers are going down and law enforcement officials say that’s in part to these monthly details.

Police from Fulton County, Henry County, the city of Palmetto, and other metro Atlanta agencies gathered at busy intersections Tuesday to look for distracted drivers and those not wearing seat belts.

Channel 2′s Ashli Lincoln followed police exclusively as they worked to discourage distracted driving.

Statewide year-to-date numbers reveal 72 fewer crash deaths reported across the state.

Carldrekia Boyd’s husband was killed in a hit-and-run crash involving a distracted driver in Fulton County.

“My life has not been the same since April 2020,” Boyd said.

Lynch said delivering the news to a loved one about a death never gets easier.

“A lot of times families want to know why, and we don’t have the answers to provide them,” Lynch said.

Tuesday’s detail in Palmetto resulted in 17 distracted driving citations, 43 seat belt citations, 3 drug arrests, 1 felony arrest, and 5 impounded vehicles.

“It’s very dangerous, when you leave your house you never know if you’re not coming back home to your family, because someone may be on the phone not paying attention, running a red light,” Lynch said.

The state also reported that 63% of the crash deaths involved people not wearing their seatbelts.
