Police said the child’s older brother, 21-year-old Christopher Fields, was putting his gun away in the next room when it went off. The 9-year-old was shot in the leg.
Fields ran and ditched the gun behind the apartment complex, according to investigators.
DeKalb County police said they want to remind gun owners that the department provides free gun safes at all of their precincts.
“This free service is provided in the hopes of preventing incidents like this from happening to other families,” the department said.
