OCONEE COUNTY, Ga. — Troopers are investigating a double fatal crash that a sheriff said started as a chase.
Oconee County Sheriff Scott Berry said a deputy was working a security detail in a subdivision in the area where it happened Monday night. He was parked in the subdivision, when he said a driver approaching him made a sudden move to avoid the deputy.
The deputy followed the car, then lost it, then found it again, but this time with its lights turned off. The car went through a yard, then toward the deputy, Berry said. Berry said the deputy avoided being hit by putting his car in reverse.
Then, the deputy got the driver’s tag number and proceeded to pursue to car.
The car sped up, failed to stop at a stop sign, and went onto Highway 316, where it crashed into the side of a tractor-trailer.
The car became caught under the truck and was dragged for several hundred feet beneath the tractor trailer before bursting into flames, Berry said.
Berry said it is unknown who was driving the car, but that it was not the car’s owner.
Due to the nature of the wreck, authorities said they are having a difficult time identifying the two people who died.
Troopers are still investigating the crash.
