Several gas stations have some of the cheapest gas prices around

ATLANTA — Many of you will get behind the wheel and hit the road for the holiday. If you are headed south of the metro, you might be able to save some money at the pump by stopping at gas stations in one area.

Channel 2′s Tom Jones traveled on Highway 138 in Clayton and Henry counties, where several gas stations have some of the cheapest gas prices around.

“I watch the news and I see the gas prices,” Robert Perkins said while filling up at the Kroger. Perkins gets sticker shock when he sees the high gas prices around the metro area. It’s $4.49 for a regular gallon at one station in Atlanta and $4.99 at another station in Midtown. Perkins pays a lot less for his gas here. That’s because he gets it in an area where gas is so much cheaper. “You can save here,” he said. “It really is lower.”

He’s talking about the gas stations along Highway 138 in Clayton and Henry counties. Just off Interstate 75, the price at the Raceway is $4.15. Will Gaspard says this area always has the lowest prices. “I’ve noticed that the prices are … the prices are lower. Lower on this side of town than it is over there.”

Gas is cheaper at the Kroger, too. “The gas is cheap and then you get a Kroger card, it cuts it down,” Perkins explained.

Cross over into Henry County and it’s a penny cheaper at this Chevron and at Murphy USA. Drivers say they appreciate every single cent they can save at the pump. “We are just blessed, that’s all I can say,” Ruby Phillips said before filling up.

A Murphy USA worker recently told Channel 2 Action News the company takes a look at prices in the area and then sets its prices competitively. Drivers wonder why gas stations in other parts of the metro aren’t doing the same to get prices lower. They say they need all the relief they can get from these high prices. “Every cent counts today especially,” Phillips said.

The gas prices in this corridor have always been lower than in other parts of the metro. People will drive out of their way to come here to fill up.
