DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A 19-year-old has died following a crash with a Georgia State Patrol vehicle.
GSP identified the man as Anthony Angeles.
Troopers said they were in the area of Kilman Drive and Bibb Boulevard for reports of illegal stunt driving. Multiple vehicles had been moving between locations throughout the night.
Several vehicles drove off when troopers arrived, and troopers chased a white Chrysler 300 that drove over a curb in an attempt to get away.
A GSP Crime Suppression Unit K-9 Trooper traveling through the intersection of Mountain Industrial Boulevard and Hugh Howell Road collided with a GMC pickup truck that troopers said they saw minutes before participating in the stunt driving activity.
Both vehicles caught fire.
The trooper and his K-9 escaped through a window, and the trooper went to help the people inside the pickup.
Angeles, who was a passenger in the pickup, was taken to the hospital where he later died.
The driver, 20-year-old Emilio DeJesus of Conyers, was also taken to the hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening, GSP said.
GSP said they owe it to the man’s family, their troopers and the public to find out exactly what happened.
The Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team is investigating, and the Office of Professional Standards is conducting an administrative review of the response.
“Illegal stunt driving and the deliberate blocking of public roads can put everyone in danger, including participants, other drivers, law enforcement officers and people who simply happen to be nearby. In this case, a young man lost his life,” they said in a statement.
The crash had the street blocked off Monday morning.
Channel 2’s Brittany Kleinpeter saw a truck hauling away a damaged Georgia State Patrol vehicle.
Triple Team Traffic’s Mike Shields said the road was cleared around 7 a.m.
