Road damaged, home flooded by broken water main

ATLANTA — A major water main break in northwest Atlanta sent a river of water gushing down a street into driveways and the basement of a homeowner.

"I looked out and it's just like Niagara Falls, a brown Niagara Falls. Just coming down the street and I opened the basement door and it was pouring in." said Juanita Morton.

Morton and her husband said the foot-deep water and mud covered their newly-installed hardwood floors and damaged furniture, electronics and a car that was parked in the driveway.

"I tried to block the water in the basement, and I pulled out one of the vehicles, but the other one I couldn't get," said homeowner Harold Morton.

The water main break collapsed one section of Chalmers Drive and buckled pavement. The broken main was fixed by late Monday afternoon and the street was reopened.

Crews will return Tuesday to finish street repairs and to clear mud from the area.
