CARROLL COUNTY, Ga.,None — DeAndre Cortez Way, better known as Soulja Boy, was released from the Carroll County Jail after quick hearing on Tuesday afternoon.
Way, 21, was arrested early Tuesday and charged with marijuana possession with intent to distribute. He was released on a $10,000 bond.
Way and four men were stopped on Interstate 20 on Tuesday morning in a Cadillac Escalade limo, according to Temple Police Chief Tim Shaw.
The officer who stopped the car found more than five ounces of marijuana, $40,000 cash and three handguns, Shaw said. He believes the other three men are bodyguards and one was the limo driver.
Way had a blank expression on his face as the judge read the charges against him, Channel 2's Tom Jones reported.
"Each of those (charges) carries a penalty of 1 to 10 years," the judge told Way.
Jones asked Shaw why Way was charged since he was a passenger in the vehicle.
"There were discrepancies in the stories, so based on those discrepancies all five were charged," Shaw responded. Police sources told Jones that Way was charged because the marijuana was found in a Louis Vutton briefcase that belonged to him and contained his passport.
Way surged to popularity in Sept. 2007 when his single "Crank That (Soulja Boy)" reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. He is currently working on his fourth album.
