Police search for man who confronted officer with gun

COLLEGE PARK, Ga. — College Park police are on the hunt for a man who they say confronted police with a gun.

Numerous 911 calls were made early Wednesday from the Lakeside Reserve Apartments.

"There's some guy walking around a girl's apartment, where she had one of their friends sent to jail the other day, and now they're walking around here, they've got pistols in their pockets," said one 911 caller.

Channel 2's Liz Artz obtained the 911 calls from the police department.

"I don't want them to hurt, this girl, she has a baby in her house," said another caller.

A 10-year veteran of the force, whose name has not been released, responded and confronted the gunmen.

"He got up and started to run, he pointed the gun at the officer. When he pointed the gun, the officer fired," said Lt. Reed Pollard, with the College Park Police Department.

Police told Artz they caught the other suspect, who they said was in a black Pontiac Grand Prix. His name is Henrico Hayes. But the man who police said pointed a gun at their officer got away.

Police do not believe the suspect was hit by a bullet. Investigators said they found his clothes in a pile nearby, along with a cellphone and the stolen gun, but there was no blood trail or other evidence to suggest the suspect was injured.

James Reid, the gun's rightful owner, told Artz none of this would have happened if his gun had not been stolen last March. He said his cousin stole it from him over a year ago and likely sold it for cash.

Artz showed Reid a picture of Hayes and asked if his cousin could be the man police are searching for.

"Ever seen your cousin hang out with someone who looked like that?" Artz asked Reid.

"No," said Reid.

Both men face numerous charges.

The incident remains under investigation, but police told Artz they don't anticipate the officer to be found of any wrongdoing.

He remains on the force since there were no known injuries.
