Police offer $5,000 reward in fatal hit-and-run on 285

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — Sandy Springs police are hoping an increased reward will help them solve a deadly hit-and-run.

A series of vehicles struck Gayla Walker, 53, the morning of Jan. 22 on I-285 westbound in Sandy Springs.

As investigators processed the scene, traffic was tied up for several hours.

Police have not been able to find any of the drivers who hit Walker and they have very little to go on.

“A bus operator that kind of witnessed the incident gave us the description of the vehicle. It was a large white vehicle that we believe struck Ms. Walker,” said Sgt. Ron Momon with the Sandy Springs Police Department.

Police say the initial vehicle that struck Walker would have had extensive damage.

Investigators and Walker's family want anyone with information to come forward.

“I think if this was to happen to somebody else, they would want that person to come forward,” said Walker’s daughter, Jacqueline.

Dunwoody police say Gayla Walker had been acting erratically at a gas station prior to the accident and refused a ride home from an officer.

Investigators say they do not know why Walker was on the interstate, but it doesn’t matter, because the bottom line is, this was a deadly hit-and-run.

If you have any information, you’re urged to call CrimeStoppers at 404-577-8477. There is a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

“Our family's praying. We pray for each other, we pray for the people who were involved who haven't come forward, because I can only imagine what that feels like also to have on your chest," said Jacqueline Walker.
