GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Gwinnett County police said a man posed as a customer at a local jewelry store before he and a female accomplice stole close to a half-million dollars in inventory.
Investigators showed Channel 2's Kerry Kavanaugh surveillance video of the male suspect holding a gun to a store clerk's back. It happened Wednesday at Kay Jewelers at the Shops at Webb Gin House Road.
The man was the first to enter the store, asking about gifts for Father's Day.
"He gets her, with his questions, to go to the area of the store where the only other employee is," said Cpl. Jake Smith with the Gwinnett County Police Department.
With the two rounded up, the suspect pulled his gun, told them to get down on the floor, and grabbed a set of keys from the female employee.
"Using the key, instead, rather than try to smash these open, indicates they've done at least a little bit of research," Smith said.
Police said the glass cases are often tough to crack, but with a key, the female suspect immediately opened and unloaded each one.
"The male suspect takes the female employee at gunpoint to various locations in the store, opens the cash registers, checks a safe in the back," Smith said.
They got about $200 in cash and close to $500,000 worth of jewelry.
Police believe the robbery lasted about three minutes.
To make matters worse, police said, the female suspect used a stun gun to shock the woman on the ground twice before finally leaving the store.
Police said the female suspect wore gloves, while the man taped his fingers to not leave any fingerprints.
Gwinnett County police are looking for tips on the case. They also want to hear from other agencies that might be investigating a similar robbery involving one male and one female suspect.
