Officer saves woman choking on ham biscuit

BRASELTON, Ga. — Officer Steve Folkers' patrol on Highway 53 in Braselton took a harrowing turn Wednesday morning.

The officer was at a Pilot gas station when a woman flagged him down.

"That's one thing about this job. You never know what's going to happen," Folkers said.

The woman's mother was choking on food and was struggling to breathe.

Folkers found out that the victim's daughter was already on the phone with 911 and the dispatcher was instructing her to do the Heimlich maneuver.

"I guess I really didn't think. I just went over there and performed the Heimlich maneuver on her I guess (for) 35 to 40 seconds," Folkers told Channel 2's Carl Willis.

And just like that, the officer pulled her through a potentially tragic incident.

Braselton Assistant Police Chief Lou Solis said this wasn't the officer's first time saving the day.

"In Gainesville, he responded to a burning house and pulled a young child out of the house," Solis said.

In 2013, Folkers and his partner, Drew Reed, rescued a 7-year-old by pulling him through a window as flames consumed his house.

"This is something the public should know that we're here to help," Solis said.

The officer told Willis he's proud to help and show the positive things that officers do daily, especially in today's climate.

"It feels good. I mean, all the guys that work here, I know we work really hard and we try to remain professional on duty, off duty, everything," Folkers said. "I'm just glad everybody's OK. I think she's OK."
