Officer attempts, succeeds at moving turtle out of roadway after being snapped at, Ga. police say

CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. — A Chatham County police officer helped move a snapping turtle out of the roadway before it could be hit by a car.

On Saturday, Lieutenant Gene Harley was driving on President Street in Savannah when he saw a snapping turtle in the middle of the roadway.

Harley tried to pick it up and help take it to the other side of the street, but the turtle was in no mood to be helped out, according to police.

Snapping turtles can tend to be feisty at times, and thus Harley had a close call with the turtle snapping at his finger.

Harley was assisted by some Savannah Police officers who were passing by, who helped him get that turtle out of the road.

One of the officers had a large milk crate in their vehicle, which the officers used to scoop up the turtle and move it across the road to where he was originally headed.

Police said the turtle is safe and sound and no one lost their fingers during the moving of the turtle.
