Customers plea for cameras in MARTA parking lots

NORTH FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — While car break-ins are a problem at more than one MARTA station in metro Atlanta, the biggest problem is at the Sandy Springs station, where thieves smashed windows on 15 vehicles.

Customers Channel 2's Tyisha Fernandes spoke to said they see MARTA police patrolling the lots occasionally and they see cameras in the actual stations, but they want cameras in the lots.

They think if criminals see them they won't target these cars.

“It won't necessarily prevent a crime but at least it would solve a crime,” victim Frank Lopez said.

Lopez parks his cars at several different MARTA stations.

He thought the parking lots had cameras until seven weeks ago, when someone smashed into his car at the College Park station and took off.

“It had a dent that didn't look too bad, but once they looked underneath the undercarriage, it actually had about $4,500 worth of damage,” Lopez said.

When he filed a report, he asked MARTA police to see the surveillance footage.

They told him they don't have cameras in these lots.

“Well, I expect better security,” Lopez said.

This past Sunday, Lopez parked his car at the Sandy Springs MARTA station, and he saw that someone smashed 15 car windows, and stole things.

Fernandes spoke to MARTA officials.

They said they're investigating the car break-ins and they have plans to install cameras -- it's in their capital improvement budget.

Regular customers, like Bill Willis, would feel safer.

“I just would urge MARTA to please do, move ahead with the program for cameras for personal safety and for property,” Willis said.

Signs that say don't leave anything in your car are posted everywhere, but for some reason, people leave things in plain sight.

Even when cameras are installed, make sure you don't have anything on your car floor or seats.
