Mother, boyfriend charged in Canton 2-year-old death

CANTON, Ga. — A Georgia mother is being charged in the death of her 2-year-old son weeks after her boyfriend was arrested.

The Canton Police Department announced they arrested Devorah Diaz Perez, 18, on Friday. She faces murder in the second degree, cruelty to children in second degree and reckless conduct charges.

Perez is the second person arrested in connection to her son’s death. Canton Police previously charged her live-in boyfriend, Celso Edison Vicente Y Vicente, with malice murder.

Officers responded to the couple’s home on Cartersville Street on Aug. 3 to a child unresponsive call. The 2-year-old was pronounced dead at the hospital.

“The death of a child is heartbreaking, and our detectives remain committed to conducting a thorough and professional investigation,” said Chief Marty Ferrell. “We appreciate the continued assistance of our law enforcement and criminal justice partners as we work to protect the integrity of this case and allow the judicial process to move forward.”
