Driver dies in multiple-vehicle crash on I-75

Cartersville police are investigating a deadly crash involving multiple cars on Interstate 75 Monday morning.
Six vehicles, including an ambulance, were involved in the crash.

According to police, a Ford pickup truck lost control in the northbound lanes near the Red Top Mountain exit and was hit by a Honda Accord. After the accident, both drivers got out of their vehicles. One was in the left emergency lanes and the other was in the left traffic lane of oncoming traffic.

A third car on the interstate tried to avoid the accident but hit the wires on the guardrail in the median.

A fourth car also tried to avoid the accident but also hit the guardrail wires, which sent it over the guardrail, slamming into the driver of the Honda Accord, who had stepped out of his car. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities identified the victim as 38-year-old Gabriel DeSantiago-Pichardo of Smyrna.

An ambulance from Central Ambulance came to the scene and then was hit by a fifth car, damaging the ambulance’s rear bumper.
The ambulance accident is being treated as a separate accident and investigated by the Georgia State Patrol.

Police are still investigating the series of crashes. No charges or citations have been issued yet.
