NORTH FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — A south Georgia man accused of intentionally ramming cars on Interstate 285 in Sandy Springs has been committed to a mental health facility, his attorney told Channel 2 Action News Friday.
Sandy Springs Police say Brady Wiggins drove into nearly a dozen vehicles on the top end of the Perimeter last month on the stretch between Peachtree-Dunwoody and Ashford-Dunwoody Roads.
"I didn't think people just hit cars and kept driving," victim Ashley Williams told Channel 2's Mike Petchenik. "I thought that was more of a Grand Theft Auto kind of thing."
Wiggins was not in court Friday for a hearing because his attorney told the judge after he posted a bond, he was taken to an inpatient treatment facility in Soperton, Ga.
“It sounds like he’s had a pretty bad life,” said defense attorney Scott Carter. “He was involved in a fire when he was three years old, his mother was killed, he was disfigured significantly and I think he’s had some psychological problems since then.”
Carter told Petchenik the Wiggins’ family still doesn’t understand what would have caused him to snap on the highway.
“This is totally inconsistent, out of character for him, from what I understand,” Carter said. “I think everyone is questioning what the cause really was.”
City prosecutor Bill Riley told Petchenik he’s on board with Wiggins getting mental health treatment.
“He’s in an in-house facility where he’s being monitored all the time and we have the complete cooperation of the family,” Riley said. “If he were to bolt from that facility, we’d be the first ones to know.”
