Mableton to become largest Cobb County city after voters approve cityhood

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — After four years and 50 town halls, Mableton will become its own city. Voters approved cityhood for Mableton on Tuesday night.

It is a big deal for Cobb County. State Rep. Erica Thomas and the South Cobb Alliance told Channel 2′s Michele Newell they worked hard to make this day a reality.

“I’m excited for the people of Mableton they have spoken they want services that are going to improve their state of life and for themselves for their children and their grandchildren Today we take a step in the right direction, giving the citizens of South Cobb what they need and deserve by creating the city of Mableton,” Thomas said in a statement.

The push to make Mableton its own city has been in works for four years now and was a bipartisan effort.

The group behind it wants to get rid of abandoned properties and add more development. It wants Mableton to have its own planning and zoning, code enforcement and parks and trash pickup. Cobb County would continue to provide public safety services.

Channel 2 Action News received the following statement from Preserve South Cobb.

“While we are disappointed with the outcome, Preserve South Cobb is grateful to the many supporters, volunteers, and donors who assisted with the campaign. We look forward to seeing how future city officials will fulfill the many promises made by cityhood advocates while honoring their pledge not to raise taxes.”

Mableton will become Cobb’s largest city and is the only recent cityhood effort in the county to succeed.

Voters rejected the other proposed cities of East Cobb, Vinings and Lost Mountain during the May primary.
