ATLANTA, Ga. — A large piece of an oak tree crashed onto an Atlanta home early Sunday, jolting a resident awake as she slept with a CPAP machine and oxygen machine running.
Three people were inside the home on Benjamin E. Mays Drive SW when the tree came down.
No one was hurt or trapped, and the home did not appear to have significant damage. A car parked in the driveway, however, appeared to be damaged.
Juanita Huntley told Channel 2’s Bryan Mims that she was asleep with her CPAP and oxygen machines hooked up when the sound of the falling tree woke her.
“It sounded like a big rubbing sound on the house,” Huntley said. “I thought it was a tornado.”
The falling tree also knocked out power at the home, creating another worry for Huntley.
She said she has more than $500 worth of meat in her freezer and is concerned it could spoil while the power is out.
Huntley believes the frequent rain in recent days may have contributed to the large branch coming down.
Everyone inside the home was able to get out safely, she said. The American Red Cross was helping the residents, and Huntley said she was told they may have to relocate because of downed power lines.
