Man tried to save life of Cumberland Mall shooting victim

Devin Cummings said he was strapping his daughter in his car when he saw Danny Brown and Violet Lambert arguing. He tried to step in once it got violent, then became the target.

COBB COUNTY, Ga — Local man says he tried to save a mother gunned down outside Cumberland mall as she begged for her life.

Police said Violet Lambert, 55, was shot and killed by 59-year-old Danny Brown on Monday.

Channel 2’s Ross Cavitt was live in Cobb County where he says a local man felt guilty for trying to diffuse the situation.

Devin Cummings said he was strapping his daughter in his car when he saw the chaos.

“I get back in the car, but the windows are down I can hear her like, ‘please don't kill me, please don't kill me,’” said Cummings.

Brown already hit Lambert as she tried to get into her car. Cummings said he hit her so hard her wig went flying, then Brown started choking her.

He then went in to help and became the target.

“I go up, I try to walk up and like, ‘is everything OK sir? I got my family out here, can you please stop?’ and that's when he was like, ‘man mother f***ker we good.’ Then pop pop,” Cummings said.

Cummings said Brown shot at him, the bullets kept coming then he found himself running for his life.

“Everybody was crying, hysterical,” said Cummings. “People running, it was so chaotic trying to calm everybody down and let them know that I’m OK because I didn't know if I was hit or not.”

Cummings said he questions whether stepping in to help was a good decision.

“I kind of feel bad like, if I wouldn’t have approached the van maybe she would have been alive,” Cummings said.

He says it really tormented him and if it happens again, he’ll probably stay in his car and call 911.

However Cummings also said the expression on the shooter’s face left him to believe this would have been a tragedy either way.
