School districts cancel, delay classes as heavy rain continues to pound north Georgia

Rain in Atlanta

ATLANTA — Rain is falling across much of north Georgia -- and it’s going to stick around for a while.

Severe Weather Team 2 says the rain will continue throughout the night, soaking an already saturated north Georgia and may cause flooding of creeks, streams and rivers across the region.

With the anticipation of flooding and a growing list of school closings, Channel 2 Action News This Morning will start at 4 a.m. on Tuesday with everything you need to know about any flooding and traffic issues in store for your day ahead.

Here’s what you need to know as the night goes on:

  • 2 to 4 inches of rain are in the forecast across metro Atlanta.
  • A flash flood watch is in effect until 7 p.m. Tuesday.
  • There is the risk of severe storms late Wednesday into Thursday morning.
  • Heavy rain is already causing flooding in parts of north Georgia.

Gilmer, Whitfield, Gordon, Habersham, Pickens, Bartow and Union counties, as well as Calhoun City Schools, Trion City Schools and Dalton Public Schools, announced that classes have been canceled Tuesday due to the threat of flooding.

Fannin, Banks, Haralson, Lumpkin, Towns, Dawson, Clay (N.C.), Cleburne (AL), Polk and Floyd counties, as well as Rome City Schools, said they will be on a 2-hour delay Tuesday.
