Homes evacuated after gas leak in Old Fourth Ward

ATLANTA — The Atlanta Fire Department has cleared the scene of gas leak in the Old Fourth Ward where homes were evacuated Thursday morning.

The leak in a sewer line was discovered at the intersection of Glen Iris Drive and East Avenue. The intersection was closed to traffic and homes and businesses were evacuated for six hours.

Crews say the a fiber contractor conducting boring work damaged the 2-inch line.

The Atlanta Gas Light crews repaired the damaged line after several hours and neighbors were allowed back in their homes just before 4 p.m. The road has also reopened.
