Turner Field floods from early evening heavy rain

ATLANTA — Early evening storms dumped rain across the Atlanta metro, dumping at least 4 inches of rain in about two hours around Turner Field according to Severe Weather Team 2 Chief Meteorologist Glenn Burns.

"It was a gullywasher, is what they call it," said Jason Coker.

Coker told Channel 2's Carl Willis it looked like a floodgate opened up in parts of the ball field.

New York Mets catcher Kevin Plawecki shot video from just below field level of water gushing into a hallway just inside the dugout.

Atlanta Braves fans like Chris Diacin told Willis they had to find cover as the rain started coming down just before 7 p.m. Thursday.

"It was a monsoon. It was a torrential downpour. We probably sat in the car for an hour before we decided to make the trip," Diacin said.

But many fans were already in the stands when the skies opened up.

"You could hardly see the field; it was pouring down rain. The whole outfield was just covered in water," Coker said.

"I was listening for the 'sorry it's been called, come back tomorrow,'" C.J. LaChapelle told Willis.

Instead, crews worked to clear the field from the plate to warning track, pulling out the squeegee to get the field back in shape.

"They know how to drain it properly, but at the same time that's a lot of rain," LaChapelle said.

Still, the game was pushed back until 9:30 p.m. and scores of fans had to leave without seeing a pitch.

"I have a job. I have to get up and go to work in the morning," Coker said.

"It was a lot worse than it was before... and to see the field, it was soaked," said Sandrial Mason.

"We've been here for a lot of games and this was one of the worst when it comes to the torrential downpour that it was," Diacin said.

Several cars ended up getting stuck on Northside Drive.

A limo driver and his passenger got stuck after trying to follow another car that actually made it through the high water.

"I thought I could get through but the waves and stuff caused the car to float. And when the waves came back, the car picked up and floated over to the right," said driver Thomas Denerson.

His limo finally got pulled out of the flooding a good while later. Water poured out when he opened the driver's side door.

No one was hurt.
