Positive parents making a difference at Gwinnett County High School

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — A group of Gwinnett County parents are tackling school violence in their district.

Channel 2′s Gwinnett County Bureau Chief Matt Johnson learned that these parents are inspiring the teens.

Even before the sun is out and before South Gwinnett High School students have started class, a group of parents have them surrounded with positivity.

This is an impact day for the South Gwinnett Parent Teacher Student organization.

It’s a day for parents to show up with bright smiles and lasting inspiration at a school where fights between students sometimes attract the most attention.

In September, 19 fights were reported in a single day, leading to lunches being served in classrooms temporarily.

Parent D.A. Williams said he knew of a potential solution.

“Our culture that we live in is waging a silent war against our children, and they’re acting out in ways as a result of what we’re seeing in our culture. But we can make a difference, and a difference starts right here with us,” he said.

The number of parents at these impact days have only grown since Williams and his wife started planning them last year.

“As parents, we have a very crucial role to play. We serve as the foundation of our students’ growth and development,” Dr. Alexis Williams said.

Now they plan to expand with a parent patrol inside the halls — not for enforcement, but for encouragement.

D.A. Williams said the message they want to convey to students is, “To say, ‘hey we’re with you, we’re not against you. We’re with you. We want to see you get to graduation.’”
