Mom says boy who threatened her daughter with steak knife allowed to return to school

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. — The mother of a 12-year-old student says she will file criminal charges against a classmate she says threatened her daughter with a large knife in the cafeteria of Creekland Middle School in Lawrenceville last month.

“Jokes were made; the one kid didn’t like it. He asked my daughter to look underneath the table, and he had this knife strapped to his ankle. It was a fairly big knife strapped underneath his pants. He made the threat, ‘Maybe next time this will shut you up’. My daughter froze, she didn’t know what to do. She was scared,” said Corri. The mother asked that her last name not be used.

The mother complained to the principal and student was suspended.

Monday, the case was heard by a school tribunal.

The panel decided not to expel the boy, who is a special needs student.

“I don’t know what his special needs are. On the spectrum, extreme, but it doesn’t give you ground(s) to bring a weapon in, strapped to your ankle,” the mother said.

A spokesperson for the Gwinnett County School District said due to privacy reasons they cannot comment on a disciplinary case, but they added, “The safety of Gwinnett County Public Schools students and staff is a top priority. Threatening students and/or staff will not be tolerated. It’s a violation of the district’s disciplinary policy and those that violate that policy will face appropriate disciplinary consequences.”
