Gwinnett high school evacuated after someone set fire inside bathroom

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — A Gwinnett County high school had to be evacuated after someone set a fire inside a bathroom.

Firefighters said a student from South Gwinnett High School called 911 shortly before 8:30 a.m. on Thursday because a hallway was filling up with smoke.

When firefighters arrived, they found a small fire in a bathroom, which they put out quickly.

Fire investigators said the fire did not spread to other areas of the school and there was no structural damage from the fire.

“Firefighters were able to determine that the fire was incendiary in nature,” the Gwinnett County Fire Department said in a news release.

The fire department said someone was treated for an unrelated medical issue at the time and was taken to a nearby hospital.

The case has been turned over to Gwinnett County School Police to investigate who started the fire.
