Early morning fire claims lives of woman, 2 family pets in Lawrenceville:GCFD

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. — According to the Gwinnett County Fire Department, an early morning fire claimed a woman’s and two pets’ lives.

On Saturday, at 6:16 a.m. Gwinnett firefighters were called to a home on Tumble Wood Trail in Lawrenceville. Officials said the 911 caller told dispatch they woke up to the smell of smoke and realized the house was on fire.

Fire officials arrived at 6:21 a.m., to find a single-family home engulfed in flames. Witnesses told firefighters that there were possible victims still inside the house.

When firefighters went inside the home, they reportedly encountered high heat and low visibility. Gwinnett authorities said search teams located a woman dead in a bathroom and two family pets that died.

Investigators determined the cause of the fire to be accidental. Three people were displaced and are receiving shelter assistance from the American Red Cross.

Due to HIPAA, Gwinnett fire officials will not be releasing the victim’s name.

Firefighters want to remind residents to develop a home fire escape plan, practice fire drills regularly, install and maintain working smoke alarms, and look for and eliminate hazards that could cause a fire to start or grow in intensity.
