Girl struck by stray bullet at Marietta apartment complex

MARIETTA, Ga. — A 12-year-old girl was injured when shots rang out near a birthday party at a Marietta apartment complex.

Lesly Gudino says she was having her 15th birthday party in her family’s apartment, at the Cinnamon Ridge Apartments on Franklin Road, Wednesday night. That’s when a bullet came through the front window into the living room, which was full of people.

The shot, which ripped through the turtle’s tub, hit her friend in the leg. Her friend is home recovering, but Gudino says she can’t shake the images from that moment.

“I started crying. I started, I dunno, I was just like, I was so nervous,” said Gudino.

Marietta police said two people who were not involved with the party started arguing and fighting on the street and seconds later, bullets started flying.

It’s the second shooting in less than 24 hours along the same road.

The first shooting happened at a neighboring apartment complex. One man, 19-year-old Christopher Wilson, was killed and two others were wounded in that shooting, but police say there’s no indication the two incidents are related.

Investigators are still tracking the gunman who killed Wilson at the complex, called the Dwell, and they've been questioning two men in the case of the gunfire near the birthday party at Cinnamon Ridge.

Neighbors aren’t sure what’s going on but say they’ve noticed the noise, the gunshots and the violence ramping up with the heat. They say they hope the city responds.

“Something has to be done about it. It’s the youth. It’s the younger generation,” said neighbor Shannon Monsanto. “They’re just out of control, killing one another. It’s sad.”

So far, no arrests have been made.

Marietta police told Channel 2’s Ross Cavitt they are considering putting a new precinct on or near the Franklin Road area.
