ATLANTA — The Georgia Department of Transportation is urging drivers in areas impacted by Tuesday’s winter storm to stay off the roads whenever possible.
GDOT says crews are out on the interstates and secondary routes that have posed “particular challenges.” Officials highlighted areas south of Interstate 20 and east of Interstate 85 as “hazardous to very dangerous.”

They are asking for patience as they try to get crews to as many places as possible.
“This is a highly unusual winter weather event impacting nearly three-quarters of the state and our crews cannot be everywhere at once,” said GDOT Commissioner Russell R. McMurry. “Georgia DOT will need time, ability to access the roads to treat or plow, and warmer temperatures working in our favor to help restore and maintain passable conditions. We thank Georgia’s citizens for staying off the roads and for your patience and understanding while our crews are working around the clock.”
GDOT says it had crews pre-treated interstates and state routes with over 1.7 million gallons of brine, but with temperatures staying below freezing, that has stopped the brine from being effective.
Crews are now applying salt and calcium chloride to help with the icing problems. They have also deployed 448 snowplows across the state.
Gov. Brian Kemp’s State of Emergency will remain in effect until Tuesday.
