GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Crews remained at the scene of a gas leak that shut down Sugarloaf Parkway in Gwinnett County late into the night Thursday.
Officials said a 4-inch gas line was hit by a utility crew that was boring under the roadway to install fiber optic cable.
“Approximately 25 people were evacuated as a precaution until the leak was stopped," Capt. Tommy Rutledge of the Gwinnett County Fire Department said.
Firefighters said they soon found that two gas lines were leaking underground.
Richard Chavez, who lives in the area, said that in addition to being stuck in gridlock for nearly an hour, he was concerned for his family.
"A lady in my neighborhood said it smelled real bad over there, and my daughter gets home around 4:30-5 p.m., and I didn't know if they were going to try to evacuate," Chavez said.
Crews were able to get the leak stopped four hours after it started. They said the road is safe again for drivers.
"We just ask that they watch for gas utility workers as they continue to do their job," Rutledge said.
