Here is how a diverging diamond can help traffic congestion on this busy Sandy Springs road

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — Crews shut down a part of Abernathy Road at GA 400 overnight as they complete a new interchange.

The “diverging diamond” on Abernathy is set to open by Monday morning’s commute.

This is just one part of GDOT’s mega-project to transform and improve traffic patterns at the Georgia 400 and the Interstate 285 corridor, limiting driver access depending on where they are coming from.

“I think it’s going to help, I think it’s a lot of gridlock, and I think it’s a creative idea,” driver Jansen Bailey told Channel 2 Action News.

A diverging diamond interchange temporarily allows two traffic directions to cross to the left side of the road. Doing this helps move high volumes of traffic through an intersection without increasing the number of lanes and traffic signals.

While the concept has since been constructed and implemented in many areas around the state and metro Atlanta, the concept still feels very new for many drivers.

“That terrifies me because we already, as is, have major traffic issues,” nearby employee Sara Askari said. “So we are going to be seeing a lot more of that, I’m sure.”

Now through the weekend, drivers should plan on using alternative ways to get around while the road is closed.
