Former President Jimmy Carter celebrates 90th birthday

ATLANTA — One of Georgia’s most famous politicians has just reached a milestone birthday.

Former President Jimmy Carter turned 90 years old Wednesday and Channel 2’s Linda Stouffer was at the Carter Center to see how supporters helped make his birthday memorable.

Volunteers at the Carter Center celebrated with the former president and his wife. They also welcomed the former first family to check out their newly planted garden at the Carter Center.

People sent in cards from all over the country to President Carter with messages like, "Happy birthday" and "You are my hero." Even his 5-year-old great-granddaughter presented him with a handmade card.

"It’s been a good first 90 years," Carter said.

One of the attendees even joked during the celebration, “You’ve definitely proved 90 is the new 70, or maybe 65!”

A video was presented that highlighted the Carters' global work for justice.

The Carters' son Chip Carter told Stouffer his dad makes another year older look easy.

“It’s really something to see him in great health. At 90 he walks everywhere, gets around," Chip Carter said.

"Maybe all of us together can continue to work together to make this country itself, reach for greatness," Carter said. "From the bottom of my heart, thank you for this great ceremony, and I look forward to working with you in the days to come.”
