Fire forces Atlanta senior living community to evacuate

ATLANTA — Atlanta firefighters worked quickly to evacuate a senior living community after a fire broke out in one of the apartments.

The fire happened Thursday morning at the Lakewood Christian Manor off Springdale Road.

“I just got my walker and came down the stairs to get out,” resident Winder Gary said.

Atlanta Fire Department spokesman Cortez Stafford said the fire started in a fifth floor apartment and is now out. The seniors and staff were evacuated due to the smoke. Many of the residents rely on walkers and wheelchairs to get around.

“I saw smoke on the 10h floor, you couldn’t see nothing,” one resident said.

Crews are still in the process of cleaning up the smoke and water damage, but mostly everyone has been allowed back into the building.

Firefighters quickly put out the fire, but residents still remained concerned over their neighbors and friends. Thankfully no one was hurt. The fire remains under investigation.
