FAYETTEVILLE, Ga. — A metro Atlanta community will honor Sgt. Chris Fisher on Tuesday with a funeral service in Fayetteville.
Fisher was sitting in his patrol car in Meriwether County when he was shot and killed.
His mother, Vicki Lynn Haywood, told Channel 2 Action News she is devastated by her son’s death but grateful for the support her family has received from the community.

“He knew every day coming what it could cost him. And you know, he didn’t care. He put the uniform on and put the badge on,” Haywood said.
Haywood said her son grew up wanting to serve others and loved both his job and the community he protected.
Channel 2’s Bryan Mims was with Haywood on Friday as she visited the growing memorial outside the Warm Springs Police Department. It was her first visit to the department since her son’s death.

Fisher, 36, joined the Warm Springs Police Department in May after years of working as a sheriff’s deputy. He was one of six officers in the department.
He was killed late Tuesday night in the parking lot of the Meriwether Country Inn and died at the scene.
Authorities said the suspect, 23-year-old Jimmie Lee Steverson, had been arrested by Fisher days earlier on marijuana and firearms charges before being released on bond.

Investigators later tracked Steverson to Anderson County, South Carolina, where he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Before joining the Warm Springs Police Department, Fisher served five years in the Army and worked as a sheriff’s deputy in Fayette, Meriwether, and Heard counties. He also served as a SWAT team officer.
Fisher is survived by his wife, a 12-year-old daughter, and a son who is nearly 2 years old.
His funeral is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Flat Creek Baptist Church.
