ATLANTA — A Georgia police officer died in the line of duty Tuesday night.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirmed that Warm Springs Office Chris Fisher was shot and killed outside a motel. The suspect, identified as Jimmie Steverson, is on the run.

Gov. Brian Kemp says he is “deeply saddened” after hearing the officer died.
“This is a tragic reminder of the dangers law enforcement face on a daily basis in service to their communities, and I ask that all Georgians lift up Fisher’s family and his fellow officers in prayer,” Kemp posted on X.

Fisher joined the Warm Springs Police Department back in May and was promoted in July, according to his Georgia Peace Officer Standards & Training (POST) records.
He previously worked for the Meriwether County Sheriff’s Office, Fayette County Sheriff’s Office and Heard County Sheriff’s Office, records show.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and the Warm Springs Police Department during this incredibly difficult time,” the Fayette County Sheriff spokesperson said. “While Deputy Fisher is no longer with our agency, he will always be remembered as a dedicated law enforcement officer who served his community with pride. He was also a great friend and brother to our staff here. We ask that everyone keep Chris’s family and fellow officers in their thoughts and prayers during this time.”
