Cobb intersection reopens after fatal motorcycle crash

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Police are investigating a fatal motorcycle crash involving a Cobb Community Transit bus.

According to the Marietta Police Department, the motorcycle hit the bus Wednesday near a transfer station at South Marietta Parkway and Aviation Road.

Witnesses say it appears the motorcyclist tried to hit the gas to beat the bus, and lost.  The impact shook the neighborhood.

Investigators say the biker likely died from the initial impact. The violent wreck happened near the Cobb Community Transit transfer station on the south loop, which has become Marietta's most dangerous stretch of roadway.

Police say they've tried to make the area more safe. Channel 2 Action News was with them this summer as they cracked down on people crossing outside of crosswalks and speeding. Ironically they had resumed the stepped up enforcement just days ago.

"Our STEP unit actually has been out here daily the last few weeks to write tickets to speeders and those jaywalking across the road in the attempt to prevent something like this from happening,” David Baldwin with the Marietta Police Department said.

Those who talked to Channel 2's Ross Cavitt said this wasn't the first time they had seen someone die on the south loop.

"So please, please everybody, please be careful because I'm tired of seeing bodies,” witness Tia Hill said.
