East Point firefighter dies in motorcycle crash

EAST POINT, Ga. — East Point firefighters are mourning the loss of a 15-year veteran of the department.

Carl Blake, 47, was killed in a crash on Jones Road in northwest Atlanta on Monday. He lost control of his motorcycle and struck a utility pole, Atlanta police said.

A witness told officers she was backing out of a driveway on the road when she saw Blake lose control of the motorcycle. There was no collision between the two vehicles, but Blake was thrown from the motorcycle when he hit a curb, police said. It is unclear what caused the crash.

East Point Fire Chief Rosemary said it's a big loss for the department.

"Blake was a model firefighter.  On his last night of duty he bravely fought a house fire at the business Kitchen and Bath at 1562 East Forrest Avenue. Although his career has ended with us, he will forever be remembered," Rosemary said in a news release.

Grief counseling will be set up for the department. Funeral arrangements are pending.
