DUNWOODY, Ga. — Dunwoody police are searching for a man who they say tried to lure two children into his car.
Police said an 11-year-old boy and his 8-year-old sister were walking in the Hidden Branches neighborhood in Dunwoody on Sunday when a man is in his 50s or 60s approached them in his car.
They said he had thinning white hair and drove a four-door, newer-model car with a triangular front.
“Me and my sister were walking our dog near the cul-de-sac down there and the man pulled up,” said the boy.
The boy said the man had a request when he drove up to him.
“He said, ‘Can you deliver this in the mailbox?’ He had this weird smile on his face. He said, ‘I’m going to need you to come in and get it,’” said the boy.
The boy said he remembered his parents’ training for situations like this.
“I said ‘no,’ and I backed off behind the car and told my sister to hide in the bushes,” said the boy.
“It’s every mother’s worst nightmare,” said the boy’s mother, Barb Maimone.
She said her son handled it like she hoped he would.
“It makes me feel so good that they know what to do and that they’ve had this experience to draw from and that they are capable to do the right thing in this moment,” she Maimone.
Maimone said she is still shaken up after seeing police cars line her street.
“We’ve talked about it over and over again. If someone offers you candy or sweets or says come to my car, you just run. But you just don’t think it’s ever going to happen to you in your lifetime,” said Maimone.
Dunwoody police Sgt. William Furman said all kids should handle similar situations the same way Maimone’s son did.
“If you see that suspicious car circling a cul-de-sac, call us,” said Furman.
