ATLANTA — Channel 2 Action News has gained new insight into the airline worker at the center of a blatant security breach at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.
Channel 2 investigative reporter Aaron Diamant has stayed on top of the story since a man waiting in the cell phone parking lot right next to the runway sent us a video showing a bag going over a barbed -wire fence.
On Wednesday, Diamant, who broke the story, confirmed the man who caught the bag works for Delta Air Lines as a baggage handler, but would not release his name.
Another viewer sent Diamant more pictures of the two people at the center of the security breach.
They're the same people seen in the video showing a woman in the cellphone lot last Saturday throwing a seemingly full plastic bag over the security fence to the airline worker waiting on the other side.
When the bag gets stuck on the barbed wire, the worker climbs the fence.
Neither the worker nor the woman has been charged with any crimes, but a Delta spokesman said the baggage handler has been suspended.
"I think it's a big deal," said former FBI agent Harold Copus.
Copus said whether or not the breach leads to criminal charges, there are other concerns.
"It shows a terrible weakness in the security at the airport," Copus said. "It shows they're not in control. They're not in control at all. There's no control and there, apparently, is no security."
On Tuesday, airport General Manager Louis Miller told Diamant there are cameras and regular patrols along the airport's 26-mile fence line and many other security measures he can't share.
"Well, whatever you got didn't work, so maybe you need to start again," Copus said Wednesday.
Copus called the undetected breach a big wake -up call.
Airport leaders would not talk about Wednesday's developments, so we still don't know if airport investigators have identified the woman in the video, or found out what was in the bag.
Channel 2 Action News will keep working to get those answers and keep track of any criminal charges or security changes at the airport as a result of this incident.
