DEKALB COUNTY, Ga.,None — DeKalb County authorities swarmed an area around Buford Highway on Wednesday morning in light of a SWAT standoff.
The incident stemmed from a shooting around 5:30 a.m. DeKalb County officers heard shots fired and zeroed in on an apartment at the Tempo Cabana apartments on Buford Highway. Officers at the scene then heard additional shots and called in the SWAT unit.
Channel 2’s Michael Buczyner went to a nearby elementary school, where DeKalb’s SWAT team was posted. Woodward Elementary School was placed on lockdown, but students were still being allowed into the building. Nearby, Cross Keys High School was also locked down.
Authorities told Buczyner it took them four hours to make contact with individuals, including two children, inside the apartment who were asleep as the situation unfolded.
"Negotiators spoke with people inside, they came out and everyone was taken into custody. The weapon was located," said Capt. Don Tracy.
Video showed SWAT team members taking a man into custody, forcing him to the ground and detaining him.
Police said they would only charge the man who fired the gun. No one was injured in the incident.
