DeKalb murder suspect accused of shooting at deputy captured after 4-day manhunt

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A DeKalb County murder suspect who led law enforcement on a manhunt for days is now in custody.

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to Channel 2′s Tyisha Fernandes on Tuesday that US Marshals arrested Nicholas Demetrius Earl in Douglasville.

Earl had been on the run since Friday when officials say he shot at a DeKalb deputy around 3 p.m. off Juliette Road and Memorial Drive in a Stone Mountain neighborhood. One of the bullets grazed the deputy.

Earl is accused of murdering Timberre Mims on June 22 in the same neighborhood where police were trying to take him into custody. Channel 2 Action News learned that Earl was released from prison last year after he served two years for armed robbery.

In addition to the murder charge, Earl now faces several additional charges: two counts of Aggravated Assault upon a public safety officer and probation violation related to armed robbery charge

“Sheriff Maddox expressed her gratitude to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Unit, the U.S. Marshals, and the Georgia State Patrol for their dedication and teamwork in apprehending the suspect. She also extended her sympathies to the family of Timberre Mims and assures the community that the Sheriff’s Office is committed to ensuring justice is served,” the sheriff’s office wrote in a statement.
