DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — DeKalb County is opening four cooling centers from Friday through Aug. 19 to help residents seek relief from continued high temperatures.
Severe Weather Team 2 has been tracking the heat wave. A heat advisory is in place for almost all of the state except the northeast Georgia mountain counties.
The county partnered with local service providers to establish the centers for vulnerable community members, including seniors, unhoused individuals and residents without adequate home cooling.
Four sites across Decatur and Atlanta are serving as cooling locations:
- the South DeKalb Day Center at New Life Community Alliance on Flat Shoals Road in Decatur,
- Frontline Response on Gresham Road in Atlanta,
- Peace Baptist Church Annex on Covington Highway in Decatur
- Golden Door Event Center on Ember Drive in Decatur.
All four centers are open Friday and Saturday. On Sunday, Frontline Response will be the only facility open.
All four locations will reopen on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
Rides to the facilities are available through DeKalb’s FAST Trac Transportation system.

Seniors requiring additional support can reach the Senior Link Line at 770-322-2950.
Officials also advise residents to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours and never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles.
