Day care for special needs children to close

MARIETTA, Ga. — Dozens of families with special needs children are worried about child care because the day care they use is closing.

Pediatric Services of America in Marietta sent notices out to parents on Aug. 15 informing them of the closing.

"I just hope that someone has a heart and can see that these families are in need," said Samantha Holsclaw.

The mother told Channel 2's Carl Willis her 3-year-old son Jaxson is medically fragile and depends on the care he receives at PSA Healthcare.

She said he has an immune system disorder, takes 13 medications a day, and needs to be fed through a tube.

"We've been to 14 centers in the local area and no one will take him because of his continuing medical conditions," Holsclaw said.

Holsclaw said she received an application to continue to receive assistance through the Georgia Pediatric Program (GAPP), but said she was denied.

Thirty-one other families, including Ken Thompson's, also received termination letters.

"We need help," said Thompson. "We're stuck. There's tons of parents. What do we do? Where do we go?"

Holsclaw said she may have to drop out of school, and several other parents said they may have to quit their jobs if they can't find another option.

"I would love to see Katie Beckett (of the) GAPP, the redeeming waiver team step in and help transfer these kids somewhere," said Holsclaw. "Maybe even some of the mainstream day cares say, 'You know what? We can help you.'"

PSA Healthcare Marietta is set to close Aug. 31.
